"Obsession beats talent." The phrase isn't mine: it belongs to Kobe Bryant, to his Mamba Mentality — that level of total focus and relentless approach he brought to preparation even before the game. Kobe wasn't just a talent: he was, by his own admission, one of the most analytical and methodical athletes in his sport. He studied opponents the way an engineer studies a system. He left nothing to chance, because — he said — leaving the outcome to fate means you haven't worked hard enough.

I made that phrase my own many years ago, and it sits on my website, because it describes something I've seen work far from the hardwood: in engineering, in meeting rooms, in the management of complex systems. But it's a phrase that needs explaining, because it risks being misread in two opposite ways — as if it meant talent doesn't count, or as if it celebrated overwork for its own sake. It's neither.

Talent is real. But it's a starting point, not a strategy

Talent exists, and denying it would be foolish. Some people grasp a concept faster, some have a more natural intuition for numbers, for systems, or for people. I recognize in myself certain recurring predispositions — the curiosity to learn, the need to trace things back to their causes, the difficulty of leaving things half-done. These are genuine gifts. But they have a structural limit: they're an initial condition, not a process.

Talent gives you an advantage at kilometre zero and then abandons you, because it doesn't know what to do when the problem gets truly difficult — when the system is too complex, the constraints too many, the solution not elegant but laborious. That's where paths diverge. And in my experience the problems that really matter — the ones that separate an organization that grows from one that struggles — aren't solved by a flash of genius. They're solved by the discipline of staying on the problem longer than is comfortable.

There's a formula that captures this well: talent becomes a real strength only when multiplied by investment — knowledge, practice, constant dedication. Obsession, in the right sense, is the name I give to that investment when it never stops. It doesn't beat talent by opposing it: it beats talent by completing it. And without that completion, talent remains an unkept promise.

What I mean (and don't mean) by obsession

I have to be precise, because "obsession" is a double-edged word. I'm not talking about overwork, about sleepless nights worn like medals, about that "I never stop" rhetoric that confuses agitation with value. Agitation without method isn't dedication: it's a lack of discipline dressed up as commitment.

The obsession I'm talking about is something else. It's the refusal to accept that a system is "too complicated to be governed." It's the discipline of continuing to break down a complex problem — one level at a time — until it stops being a wall and starts being a readable structure. It's intellectual before it's emotional: curiosity that won't settle, rigor that seeks the cause and not the symptom.

I had the clearest proof of this early in my career, when I worked on an embedded system for restoring damaged neural pathways — a project straddling electronic engineering and neurology, developed with the University of Perugia and the University of South Florida. I had no talent for the biology of neural signals: it wasn't my field. What I had was the inability to let go. I learned how signals propagate in the brain, how to extract information from an implanted electrode, how to design the analog front-end to read them and the digital logic to reconstruct them. Not because I was gifted, but because I couldn't accept stopping halfway through a system I didn't yet fully understand.

From the individual to the organization

Here's the point that makes this phrase a leadership principle and not just a motto. Productive obsession, to matter at all, cannot stay locked in the head of whoever possesses it: it has to become a property of the organization. And here a phrase from Denzel Washington captures the shift better than any other:

"Dreams without goals are just dreams, and they ultimately fuel disappointment. To achieve your goals, you must apply discipline and consistency. Because without commitment you'll never start, but more importantly, without consistency you'll never finish."

It holds for an athlete, for an actor, and it holds for a company aiming at leadership in its market: vision points the direction, but it's discipline and consistency that walk it — innovating relentlessly and maintaining rigorous operational and financial practices.

The task of whoever leads, then, is not to be the brightest person in the room. It's to build the conditions for that rigor to become the group's shared norm, not someone's heroic exception. It means making commitment non-negotiable and setting the example first; it means turning obsession from a solitary trait into collective discipline, working alongside people rather than above them. A leader who cultivates this doesn't multiply their own talent: they multiply everyone's.

Why it's a principle I defend

Individual talent isn't reliable at scale: it can't be planned, it can't be replicated, it leaves with the person who holds it. Obsession-as-method, on the other hand, is a capability that stays, that can be taught, and that makes an organization able to face problems that talent alone couldn't withstand.

I've seen it happen. Over more than a decade in a complex industrial context, leading the development of electronic systems across the entire lifecycle — from concept to industrialization — I've seen discipline produce results that no intuition, alone, would have generated: regulatory compliance turned from a constraint into a competitive lever and a selling point; design-to-cost processes that lowered costs while improving reliability; portfolios of complex projects run in parallel without losing control of the system. None of these results came from talent alone. They came from talent multiplied by the decision, repeated every day, not to settle for the first plausible answer.

It's the same discipline that led me to pair engineering with an Executive MBA in strategy and finance: not to abandon the technical dimension, but because I couldn't accept seeing only half the system. Governing the complexity of a product and governing the complexity of a business are the same discipline applied to different materials. And it's where safety, reliability and regulation stop being a constraint and become the very ground of competitive advantage that this discipline makes the biggest difference.

Talent is the raw material. It's obsession that turns it into a work of art.

It's the same hunger of that eight-year-old who took apart his first computer not to fix it, but because he couldn't stand not knowing how it worked inside. Talent had given him curiosity. Everything else came from never stopping.
